A Soothing Approach: Aquatic Therapy for Chronic Pain

Oct20th 2025

Living with chronic pain is life-changing, especially when traditional methods fail to provide effective relief. This was something a recent patient of ours discovered for herself when she developed long-term pain after undergoing spinal surgery. Nothing worked–until she tried aquatic therapy for chronic pain.

Today, we want to share this patient’s story–we’ll call her Jennifer. She was a 48-year-old teacher when she had her surgery, and she came to HAWAII SPORTS & BALANCE CENTER in her early fifties after years of struggling with persistent pain, limited mobility, and a decreased quality of life. She was at her wit’s end but, with our urging, decided to try something new–and it transformed her life.

Jennifer’s Story: Finding Relief Through Aquatic Therapy

Jennifer had already tried land-based physical therapy. While exercise did seem to help, performing those exercises was immensely difficult for her, so it felt like she was hardly making any progress.

When we suggested aquatic therapy, Jennifer was surprised–and a little worried. She shared that she wasn’t much of a swimmer, even before her surgery. Fortunately, aquatic therapy doesn’t require any swimming skills. Instead, it actually looks a lot like the land-based physical therapy she was familiar with, which she had just performed in the water.

A Gentle Start with Immediate Benefits

When Jennifer first used aquatic therapy for chronic pain, she immediately noticed a difference compared to her land-based experiences. The buoyancy of the water relieved much of the pressure off her spine, allowing her to perform stretches and other exercises that had been too uncomfortable on land.

She also appreciated our gently heated pool, as the warm water provided soothing relief, helping her relax and feel more at ease.

Building Strength Without Overloading the Body

After a few weeks, Jennifer increased the intensity of her exercises. She began working to restore her core strength and improve her posture through exercises like water walking and resistance training using aquatic weights.

She was shocked at how much progress she made–and how few pain flare-ups she experienced during her program. The water’s resistance worked her muscles without straining her body, giving her the benefits of exercise without the pain.

Gaining Confidence and Mobility

As Jennifer’s sessions continued, she noticed improvements in her balance, stamina, and ability to move without fear of pain outside of the pool. She noticed that daily movements, such as bending to pick up a sock or walking up the stairs, were becoming more manageable. Her pain levels decreased, and she felt like she had found her confidence and independence again.

Today, Jennifer is back to doing what she loves—teaching, gardening, and spending time with her family. While she still has occasional discomfort, aquatic therapy has helped her regain control over her life. By combining gentle exercises with the natural properties of water, Jennifer found relief that land-based treatments couldn’t provide.
